What to Do if Your NU Smile Aligners Don’t Quite Fit

Do you want to straighten your teeth? You could try clear aligners! NU Smile aligners not only compete with other brands, but they are superior in many respects. For one, they are made of a hypoallergenic polyurethane resin, so there is very little chance of reaction. Secondly, they are made specifically for you in-house, so you should always get a good fit.

But what happens if your aligner doesn’t fit correctly? Continue reading to learn more about the NU Smile aligner process and how you can fix an aligner that won’t fit.

How are NU Smile Aligners Made?

NU Smile aligners are unique in that they are 3D printed right at the dental office once scans are taken of your teeth.

First, photos are taken of your teeth and composited into a “smile preview.” This will allow you to see what your smile might look like after the process is complete. Your dentist understands that it’s hard to invest in something you can’t see, so the smile preview is a good way to let you preview the results before committing to the treatment.

Next, your dentist will use a 3D scanner to take images of your entire mouth—no weird-tasting putty necessary. This scan will then be used in the printer to custom print your new aligner.

How are NU Smile Aligners Made?

If you’re just starting the treatment, the aligner may seem a bit tight at first. The trays are meant to guide your teeth into their new position with gentle pulling and pushing force inside the aligner itself.

However, it should snap into place over your teeth and stay put. If your aligner won’t stay in place, there are some steps you can take to ensure that it’s working properly.

Inspect the Aligner

Make sure there’s no damage to the aligner or any food debris inside it preventing it from fitting properly. The NU Smile aligner is made from a very durable polyurethane, but it’s not indestructible. If it is damaged, take it back to your dentist to get a new one made.

Practice Chewing Exercises

There are small styrene cylinders called “chewies” that can be used to seat your aligners properly. Simply put your aligner in and begin gently biting down on the chewie. This will work the aligner down into position.

Ask Your Dentist About “Backtracking”

If you’re switching to a new aligner and it doesn’t fit, your teeth may not have shifted into their new positions yet. In this case, ask your dentist if you should return to your previous aligner. Don’t make this decision yourself as you don’t know what it might do to your treatment plan.

If you’re still having trouble with your aligner, make an appointment with your dentist to resolve the issue. There may have been an unexpected shift that will require a change in your treatment plan. Thankfully, with NU Smile aligners, your dentist can just print you a new custom aligner on-site, so you don’t have to wait!
