Noticing fine lines and wrinkles in the mirror is a natural part of aging, but if you’re looking to maintain a youthful appearance a little longer, facial injections can help! BOTOX and dermal fillers are minimally invasive procedures designed to smooth wrinkles and refresh your look. However, some patients experience mild bruising at the injection sites. To help you enjoy your results without unwanted discoloration, here are five ways to minimize bruising after treatment.

Avoid Certain Supplements

Some over-the-counter supplements can increase your risk of bruising by affecting clotting time. Fish oils, omega-3 fatty acids, high-dose Vitamin E, garlic, and turmeric are common culprits. It’s best to stop taking these supplements about two weeks before your treatment. However, always consult your healthcare provider before making any changes to your supplement routine.

Be Cautious with Medications

Certain blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin, clopidogrel, warfarin, heparin, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen or naproxen, can also contribute to bruising after facial injections. Never discontinue prescription medications without consulting your doctor. If possible, your provider may recommend pausing these medications about a week before your treatment to reduce the risk of bruising.

Skip Alcohol Before and After Treatment

Alcohol can dilate blood vessels, increasing the likelihood of bruising. To minimize this risk, avoid drinking alcohol for a few days before and after your treatment. Instead, focus on staying hydrated with water or herbal tea, which can promote better circulation and support the healing process.

Apply Cold Compresses

After your injections, applying a cold compress to the treated areas can help constrict blood vessels and reduce bruising. Wrap an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas in a thin cloth and gently place it on the injection sites for 10-15 minutes at a time. Be sure to avoid direct contact with ice to prevent skin irritation or frostbite.

Take a Break from Exercise

Strenuous physical activity can increase blood flow and potentially worsen bruising after treatment. To ensure optimal healing, avoid intense workouts for at least 24 hours post-treatment. Give your body time to recover by resting and engaging in light activities instead.

While bruising after facial injections is typically mild and temporary, following these simple steps can help minimize its appearance and promote a smooth healing process. If you have any concerns or questions, consult with your dentist to ensure the best possible results!
